Cream of Rice is a staple carb source in bodybuilding and strength sport nutrition — a finely milled rice powder that cooks (or mixes) into a smooth, easily digested porridge-style meal. It's popular because it delivers a large amount of clean, complex carbohydrate with minimal fat, fibre, or fructose, which makes it easy on the stomach even in large servings — a common problem with whole grains or fruit-based carb sources around training.
Why lifters use it
A typical 50g serving provides roughly 38–40g of complex carbohydrate with under 1g of fat and almost no sugar. Because it's low in fibre and fat, it digests quickly relative to whole rice or oats, which is why it's commonly used pre-workout (fast, accessible energy without feeling heavy) and in bulking phases (an easy way to add calories without the bloat of eating large amounts of whole food).
How to prepare it
Most Cream of Rice is mixed with hot water — add boiling water to the powder, cover, wait 30 seconds, then stir to a porridge consistency. Adjust water quantity for a thicker or thinner texture. Some brands (like [HR Labs Cream of Carbs]) blend in oats for a heartier texture and slightly slower digestion, which works better spread across the day rather than strictly around training.
Flavoured vs unflavoured
Most options on this page come pre-flavoured (chocolate, peanut butter, cinnamon, etc.) and are genuinely more palatable than older unflavoured versions — useful if you're eating large carb servings daily and need variety to stay consistent. If you prefer to control sweetness/flavouring yourself, look for an unflavoured option and add your own toppings.
Cream of Rice vs oats
Both are complex carbs, but Cream of Rice digests faster and is gentler on the stomach due to its low fibre content — better suited to pre/post-workout timing. Oats digest more slowly and keep you fuller for longer, making them better for general meals away from training.
