Mass gainers exist for one specific problem: eating enough food to build muscle when your appetite, schedule, or metabolism makes that genuinely difficult through meals alone. They're not a shortcut or a replacement for real food — they're a calorie-dense supplement for people who've tried to eat more and struggled to hit the numbers consistently.
What's actually in a mass gainer
Unlike a whey shake (20–25g protein, ~100–120 calories), a mass gainer combines protein with a large amount of carbohydrate — often maltodextrin or oats — to push total calories per serving much higher. Products in this category range from around 500 calories per serving up to 1,270+ calories when mixed with milk, with protein typically in the 30–50g range and carbohydrate anywhere from 100g to over 250g per serving. Some also add creatine, glutamine, and a vitamin/mineral spread to round out the nutritional profile.
Who actually needs a mass gainer
- Genuine "hard gainers" — a fast metabolism or small appetite that makes hitting a calorie surplus through food alone difficult
- Very high training volume (multiple sessions a day, competitive athletes) where food alone can't keep pace with energy needs
- Anyone who's tried to bulk through meals first and consistently falls short on calories
Who probably doesn't
If you can hit your calorie target through regular meals plus a standard whey shake, you likely don't need a dedicated mass gainer — the extra cost typically isn't worth it, and some people find the very high carb load causes bloating or digestive discomfort. Mass gainers are a tool for a specific problem (not eating enough), not a faster way to build muscle in general.
How to use: mix with milk rather than water for maximum calories, and split servings across the day (post-workout, before bed, or between meals) rather than one huge shake, which many people find easier to tolerate.
Not sure if you actually need the extra calories, or would be better off with a standard whey? See our Whey Blend range if you're building muscle at a normal pace, or Creatine & Glutamine to add strength support without the extra carbs/calories.
